What do Mormons believe about salvation?

Mormons believe to gain salvation is to live with one’s family and with Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ eternally. This salvation can only come to an individual when he or she applies the Atonement of Jesus Christ to his or her life.

Mormonism teaches that Jesus Christ saves man from both spiritual and physical death. Each person that has ever lived will overcome physical death and be resurrected. This is a free gift given by our Savior. In order to overcome spiritual death, which is a separation from God, a person must have been a faithful follower of Jesus Christ or accepted His gospel after death. Through the application of the Atonement in their lives, they can be made perfect after they have done all they could do to live righteous lives.

Mormons believe each man and woman came here to earth to receive a physical body and learn how to live so that he or she could return to live with Heavenly Father. That was the plan from the beginning, when our Heavenly Father sent our first parents to live on earth. Heavenly Father knew we would make mistakes, though, so a part of this plan included the Savior of the World, Jesus Christ. We will be tested in this life, but part of the test is proving that we can apply the Atonement, which is essential to salvation.
When one is forgiven by the Lord, the Lord has promised that “he who has repented of his sins, the same is forgiven, and I, the Lord, remember them no more” (Doctrine and Covenants 58:42).

Mormons believe much of the tenants of salvation are found and taught in the Book of Mormon, which is another account of Jesus Christ, specifically of His visit to the people of the American continent. The Book of Mormon came about in the hands of Joseph Smith, a modern-day prophet who founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or the Mormon Church. In the Book of Mormon, one learns of Christ’s love and His laws. These laws are essential for salvation, for the proper teaching and direction of His church on earth, and for each person to come to know their Savior personally.
